Whether it's due to the scenery, the weather or the celebrated Yankee spirit, Maine has produced some of the country's best writers and inspired many of the finest books. We've put together a list of children's books we hope you and your family will enjoy. Look for them in your local bookstore or library or on the internet.
American tall tales are usually set in the largess of the West. Giant men move mountains, lay the railroad and wrestle wild creatures. A new tall tale is set closer to home in a New Hampshire quarry. When one looks at the immense feat of mining granite, it is easier to believe that it was done by giants rather than by mere humans. In this tale, five giant sisters mine granite and rule the White Mountains. When one sister carves a live baby from granite just to say she could, she is shocked by the ruckus the baby makes. All the sisters try and help, but the baby’s cries form a cloud that covers New Hampshire and its neighboring states. A young, plucky (and regular sized) girl has the answer and shows the sisters how to put the granite baby to sleep. Gorham illustrator, Kevin Hawkes, provides splendid, bright illustrations for this giant tale.
